CUHK vice-chancellor Rocky Tuan

The vice-chancellor of the Chinese University, Rocky Tuan, has said that scholars at the college are free to talk about Hong Kong independence but cannot be permitted to advocate or spread propaganda.

He was responding to questions about Hong Kong University law professor Benny Tai, who was strongly criticised by the Hong Kong and central governments after telling a Taiwan forum that Hong Kong could consider independence if China ever became a democracy.

Professor Tuan would not comment specifically on Professor Tai's case, but stressed that universities are places for academic study - and not for politics.
