Around 230 people have had their Easter holiday travel plans scuttled after a travel agency announced overnight that it may close down due to a cash crunch.

The licence of Action Holiday has been suspended after it notified the Travel Industry Council (TIC) on Tuesday night that it was suffering from financial difficulties.

The company told the council that some of the 235 customers affected had bought air tickets or travel packages for the Easter period.

The travel watchdog said it has received six complaints so far, involving around HK$600,000.

But because most of the affected customers did not receive any official receipts from Action Travel, the TIC said it may be very difficult for them to seek redress from the Travel Industry Compensation Fund.

Some of the victims have also filed reports with the police.
