  • Think tank moots Sai Kung plots for 30,000 flats

A think tank says it has identified two hillside areas in Sai Kung which are ideal locations to build public housing.

The Our Hong Kong Foundation estimates that the two sites in Shap Sze Heung, which cover 64 hectares, could provide space for up to 30,000 flats.

A spokesman for the foundation, Stephen Wong, said the two sites are owned by the government, outsides country park areas, and are not zoned as greenbelt land. Therefore, he said, there is no need for any compensation or acquisition plans.

The land is also close to existing infrastructure and relatively flat when compared to other sites the government is looking at for public housing estates, he said.

But the think tank said Hong Kong needs to build new towns the size of Sha Tin or Tai Po to overcome the city's housing problems and land reclamation is the way forward for large scale projects like that.
