Taiwanese authorities have been urged to issue a visa to murder suspect Chan Tong-kai "on humanitarian grounds" so he could turn himself in for killing his girlfriend there in 2018.

The call was made on Tuesday by Reverend Peter Koon, who has been helping Chan over the case.

Koon told the media that their legal team in Taiwan has contacted the authorities there many times, informing them of Chan's willingness to travel to the island to surrender himself.

Chan is believed to have killed his pregnant girlfriend Poon Hiu-wing in Taipei and put her body in a pink suitcase before discarding it.

"But there has been no positive feedback so far," Koon said, adding that he has tried everything to help Chan return to Taiwan.

Koon said at the moment Chan is living in a safe house arranged by the police.

Chan only served a short prison term in Hong Kong for money laundering because he cannot be tried here for Poon's murder.

The SAR government had cited the case to push the ill-fated extradition bill in 2019, which led to months of protests in Hong Kong.
