  • Syllabus panel drops separate chapter on Hong Kong

Revisions to the History and Chinese History curricula for junior secondary students will include Hong Kong's role in China's opening up from the 1970s, and there won't be a separate chapter on Hong Kong history.

A consultation document issued by the Education Bureau had suggested that a stand-alone chapter on Hong Kong history would be included in the Chinese History syllabus. But now the government-appointed panel for the subject's revision has dropped the plan.

The chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Revising Junior Secondary Chinese History and History Curricula, Leung Yuen-sang, said this was a framework for general Chinese history, meant for Secondary One to Three students "to have a comprehensive understanding of the Chinese history".

Politically-sensitive events such as the June 4 Tiananmen Square crackdown will not be mentioned in the syllabus, but Leung said teachers would still be free to raise the issue and discuss it with students.

Schools will start introducing the new curricula in the 2020-2021 academic year.
