May Tse talks to RTHK's Janice Wong
A concern group has called on the government to abandon the current practice of dumping miscarried foetuses at landfill sites and to adopt a more humane approach.
A spokeswoman for the Little Baby Concern Group, May Tse, said the current official policy classifies a foetus of under 24 weeks as “clinical waste” and this is sent to landfills as rubbish.
Tse wants the government to treat these foetuses in a more humane manner, and also give parents the right to cremate or bury them if they choose to.
She said on the mainland and in countries like Britain, parents are given this right.
The group's spokeswoman said if parents don't want to do so, the government should arrange for the cremation of the foetuses.
Tse told RTHK's Janice Wong she will be meeting officials for a second time next week to push the demands.
Several opposition lawmakers are also urging the government to change its current policy.
