The Police Commissioner Chris Tang has criticised people who flee bail, after former Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui declared self-exile during a trip to Denmark, before leaving for the UK.
Without naming names, Tang said on a television interview that it was irresponsible to lie to a court about a trip, adding people should feel ashamed for fleeing after “inciting youngsters” who are now jailed for rioting and after raising large sums of money via crowdfunding.
Tang said the force would look into whether a false statement was made - and the legality of the crowdfunding campaigns.
Hui previously started a number of fundraising campaigns for protest related cases, including a private prosecution he filed against the policeman who shot a protester in Sai Wan Ho last year.
Meanwhile, Tang said the force has dealt with 60 per cent of the 600 complaints against officers during the anti-government protests.
He said officers involved in 24 complaints have been rebuked, five of them will undergo disciplinary review, and four will undertake consequences including having the misconduct recorded in their profile.
Tang also admitted that there were “obvious inadequacies” in the way the force handled the Yuen Long gang attack in July last year, saying officers got there too late.
He said there will be an internal disciplinary review after another law enforcement agency concludes its investigation.
