New People's Party chairwoman Regina Ip says she's considering retracting a motion to censure Ted Hui, as legal proceedings are about to start over his Legco phone-snatching incident.
Hui has been suspended by his Democratic Party, and is on bail following his arrest for common assault and dishonest access to a computer.
Ip, who was originally planning to move the motion on the 23rd of this month, says she will now consult other pro-government lawmakers to see whether to go ahead.
Hui will be stripped of his seat if he is sentenced to over three months in prison, or if he gets a on-month sentence and two-thirds of lawmakers support his disqualification.
His arrest stems from the incident last month, when Hui snatched the phone of a Security Bureau official at the Legislative Council and took it into the men’s toilet.
His actions were condemned by his own party colleagues, pro-establishment lawmakers, and the government.
The lawmaker apologised, and said he did it because he suspected the government was breaching the Privacy Ordinance by collecting personal information on lawmakers.
He acknowledged however that snatching the phone was not the right thing to do.
