  • Protesters urge lawmakers not to protect Ted Hui

Around 20 people held a protest outside Legco on Wednesday urging pro-democracy lawmakers not to side with legislator Ted Hui over the phone-snatching scandal he is embroiled in.

Hui has been under fire for grabbing the phone of a government official saying he suspected her of unlawfully collecting personal information on lawmakers. He later apologised to the public and the official over his action after coming under heavy criticism.

The protesters, a group called Real HongKongers View, said it is improper for anyone to snatch away someone's phone regardless of their motive.

They said the pan-democratic camp would be sending the wrong message that this type of behaviour is acceptable, if they protect Hui from being kicked out of office.

The Democratic Party has suspended Hui from the party and is conducting a disciplinary probe against him. But it hasn't decided its position on whether to oppose a censure motion planned by some pro-government lawmakers against Hui.

Meanwhile, Legco president Andrew Leung wrote to all legislators on Wednesday, urging them to abide by the law and to respect others working in the Legco complex.
