Several people staged a protest outside the University of Hong Kong's law faculty building on Tuesday, urging management to sack legal scholar Benny Tai for his comments on Hong Kong independence at a conference in Taiwan.

Beijing officials, the SAR government and pro-establishment parties have accused Tai of advocating independence for the city. He had suggested that it could be one option for Hong Kong should China ever become a democratic nation.

The group behind the protest, Justice Complaints, said Tai should be fired for “spreading independence ideas” and “poisoning the young”.

The group also accused Tai of colluding with separatist forces on the mainland and in Taiwan.

The protesters also said they are planning to write to business tycoons and companies, urging them to stop making donations to the university, to help stop the institution from "spreading poisonous ideas to students."

They also said the university should not give any extra funding to its law faculty and it should review the number of courses and staff there.
