Dozens of people staged a demonstration on Thursday near the Tsim Sha Tsui hotel where visiting Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is staying, accusing him of being a tyrant and a dictator.

There was a heavy police presence as the Filipino protesters were joined by local civic groups, including the Confederation of Trade Unions and the Civil Human Rights Front.

The protesters said Duterte’s “war on drugs” has left more than 13,000 people dead and the president has been "silencing" his opponents.

Eman Villanueva, one of the organisers of the protest, said the security situation in the Philippines is deteriorating.

"We fear for our families. We fear for the people we love because they are there, and we see that the killings are happening everywhere," he said.

"There are actually mass murders happening all over the country. The government is saying that this is actually a result of their drugs war, but we do not believe that is the case."

Duterte arrived in Hong Kong on Tuesday night for a short working visit.
