Ocean Park says one of its Chinese sturgeons died on Tuesday morning despite being treated with antibiotics and anti-fungal medications.

It said the fish started losing its appetite and showed signs of a gill infection in December.

Ocean Park holds sturgeons bred in captivity in collaboration with the Yangtze River Fisheries Research Institute.

The park's executive director of zoological operations and conservation, Suzanne Gendron, said it's working closely with the institute to study the infection to increase the fishes' chance of survival in captivity.

A number of Chinese sturgeons have died since they arrived in the park about 10 years ago.
