Hong Kong First legislator Claudia Mo on Saturday criticized the way the police handled the way they arrested Democratic Party member Ted Hui, saying it was unnecessarily public and high-profile.
Hui was arrested on Saturday morning on charges of common assault and access to a computer with dishonest intent.
The charges relate to an incident last month in which Hui snatched the phone of a Security Bureau official at the Legislative Council and took it into the men’s toilet – actions that were condemned by his own party colleagues, pro-establishment lawmakers, and the government.
Mo said she supported Hui unconditionally, and was outside the police station and called out "be strong" to Hui when he arrived in the police car.
Mo criticized the way the arrest was handled.
"I think the police have adopted an unnecessarily high-profile way of arresting him," Mo said. "I mean: couldn't they just ask him to come to a certain police station to give a statement?"
She also questioned the route that police had chosen for Hui’s trip to the station, describing it as "unthinkable".
