An investigation committee has been set up in Legco to look into whether pro-democracy lawmaker Ted Hui should be stripped of his seat for snatching a phone from a government official last month.

This comes after New People's Party Regina Ip submitted an application for a censure motion against Ted Hui over his "misbehaviour" .

The matter will now be taken up the probe committee, which will based on its findings, may or may not bring it before the council. Lawmakers could then vote on the censure move and if a two-thirds majority backed it, Hui would be removed from the house.

Hui grabbed the phone of the official who was in the Legco complex, but later apologised. He said he suspected the officer was collecting personal information on lawmakers.

Ip said Hui's action was unacceptable and questioned his explanation.

Some pro-democracy lawmakers said they had not tried to block Ip's motion as it would have opened a debate on the matter. This, they said, would have given the pro-establishment camp more opportunities to target Hui.

Hui was arrested earlier this month over the incident. The Democratic Party has suspended his membership and is holding a disciplinary investigation into the matter.
