Kwok Ka-ki talks to RTHK's Jimmy Choi
Legco's House Committee has approved a request for a debate on what effect legal scholar Benny Tai's recent comments on Hong Kong independence have had on national and SAR interests.
The DAB's Gary Chan called for a debate, saying the event where Tai was speaking in Taiwan was to promote secession.
The Legco discussions are due to be held on May 9.
But the committee on Friday voted down a move by Civic Party legislator Kwok Ka-ki for a debate on what he said was the damage caused by the government's subsequent condemnation of Tai.
Kwok told RTHK's Jimmy Choi that he’s not surprised his motion was rejected, but at least lawmakers will get to discuss the saga.
"An adjournment debate will be an opportunity for all the councillors to speak on behalf of freedom of speech and freedom of academic research," the legislator said.
Tai, a founder of the 2014 Occupy protests, had put forward a hypothetical suggestion that Hong Kong could one day consider the idea of independence, should China ever become a democracy.
