Police have ended an investigation against pro-Beijing legislator Junius Ho – who was accused of calling for the killing of his political opponents at a public rally last year – saying there is not enough evidence.
After seven months of investigation, police said they could not find enough evidence to prosecute Ho for his tirade against those who advocate Hong Kong's independence.
A police spokesman said that the investigation team had sought legal advice before arriving at its decision.
The incident happened at a public rally Ho organised last September to demand that University of Hong Kong sack law professor and Occupy movement leader Benny Tai.
At the rally, Yuen Long district councillor Tsang Shu-wo repeatedly asked the crowd "if people [claim to be] not Chinese and seek Hong Kong independence; aren't they outsiders who should be killed?"
Ho then responded by saying, “no mercy”.
Speaking to reporters later, Ho asked "if [independence-seekers] are not killed, what else are we to do?"
Asked if that amounted to criminal intimidation, Ho responded by saying that it’s “not a crime to slaughter pigs or dogs”, and warned the journalists not to take his comments out of context. He later said he didn't mean that the lives of people should be taken.
A Legco motion to censure Ho over the incident was abandoned earlier this year after the pro-Beijing camp who are in majority blocked it.
