The MTR Corporation says it has taken steps to disinfect the busy Kowloon Tong Station after one of its staff members was found to have a bacterial infection that can lead to potentially fatal illnesses.

The rail operator said health officials informed it late last night about the station assistant's meningococcal infection, which is linked to a bacteria that can cause deadly diseases like meningitis and blood poisoning.

The Centre for Health Protection said the infection is a serious illness requiring prompt treatment with antibiotics.

The MTR Corporation said it has asked station staff to report any ill health symptoms, such as fever and coughing.

Many passengers outside the station said they will be more careful, but said they are not overly worried.

Some passengers said they did not know much about the infection.

According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, such bacteria is spread through respiratory and throat secretions.
