  • Justice chief silent on security weak spot claim

Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng said on Monday that it would not be appropriate for her to comment on a top Beijing official's claim that Hong Kong is a weak spot when it comes to the country's security.

Liaison office director Wang Zhimin said at the weekend that the SAR is the only place in the world without legislation to safeguard national security.

Cheng was asked by reporters if she thinks the central government is putting pressure on Hong Kong to bring in Basic Law Article 23 security laws, but replied only that the SAR government understands what is required of it.

"Enacting Article 23 is a constitutional duty of the SAR government so that is something to be done. But the important thing is that when it is to be done is a matter that the Chief Executive has said a number of times she will find the appropriate moment that the society and the circumstances would be suitable before this is being looked at," Cheng said.

"Then we will find the appropriate time to discuss the content and how we are going to deal with it."
