Lam Ching-choi talks to RTHK's Janice Wong

The chairman of the Elderly Commission said on Thursday that Hong Kong needs to consider all possibilities, including some "really crazy or innovative ways", when it comes to providing more space for the elderly at private care homes.

Lam Ching-choi was responding to the Chief Executive Carrie Lam's comment at a Legco question and answer session on Wednesday, that providing more space for elderly residents in care homes could mean longer waiting times for others in need.

Speaking after attending an RTHK programme, Lam Ching-choi who is also an Executive Council member, said he still advocates boosting the floor space to resident ratio in care homes, even when it is not an easy task.

He said building more elderly care homes would help solve the problem. But he said this often takes a long time and the government should look into other possibilities.

"No matter it's school or land, farmland ... we can build residential homes. Or we should incorporate residential homes in new developments, no matter it is a public or private development," he said.

"All these we should consider, no matter how crazy or innovative it is."

He told RTHK's Janice Wong that private developers had actually welcomed a plan to build elderly care homes along with flats on plots they acquire.
