  • Hong Kong warned of another scorching weekend

Lee Shuk-ming ralks to RTHK's Timmy Sung

Hong Kong is set for another scorching weekend, warns the weatherman.

The Observatory said the current hot weather that has seen the city sweltering will continue for a few more days before the rains arrive.

Senior Scientific Officer Lee Shuk-ming said the heat is linked to an anti-cyclone – a large-scale circulation of winds around a central region of high atmospheric pressure – and the condition is here to stay for a few more days.

This comes as the current hot spell created a new record for May, with temperatures exceeding 33 degrees for nine days in a row. The highest temperature recorded by the Observatory on Friday was 33.1 degrees.

Lee also told RTHK's Timmy Sung that the amount of rainfall recorded from January until now was 170.7 millimetres, the second lowest since 1884.

The Observatory had earlier warned people planning to engage in outdoor work or activities to drink plenty of water and avoid overexertion.

Earlier this month, a hiker had to be airlifted to hospital due to exhaustion and authorities received multiple calls for help from groups who had gone hiking in the hot weather.
