The Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) has warned Hong Kong media workers they should be concerned for their safety while covering stories on the mainland, after a second SAR journalist was roughed up there in four days.
A Now TV cameraman was seeking treatment at a Beijing hospital on Wednesday morning after he was forced to the ground and handcuffed by several police officers, leaving him with a wound to his head. He was released after being detained for some time.
On Saturday, a Cable TV reporter was beaten up by two men while covering the 10th anniversary of the Sichuan earthquake.
The vice-chairwoman of the HKJA, Shirley Yam, said members are shocked by the latest attack.
"This is the second attack against a Hong Kong journalist within a week and we strongly condemn such kind of violence against any journalist. We call on the Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, to intervene. She should speak to mainland authorities on this incident. It should not be allowed to happen again."
Earlier, Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung said the government is very concerned about the safety of journalists as they carry out their duties, no matter where they are.
The SAR government also issued a statement saying its Beijing office had immediately contacted the State Council's Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office to express concern over the police's treatment of the Now TV cameraman.
The statement said the SAR's Beijing office would render all possible assistance to media workers involved in the incident.
