Prosecutors in Taiwan have asked the SAR authorities to provide DNA samples from a Hong Kong man after an autopsy showed his murdered girlfriend was pregnant at the time of her death, media reports say.

Taiwan media say prosecutors have asked for DNA samples from 19-year-old Chan Tong-kai to see if he was the baby's father.

Chan is suspected of murdering his girlfriend 20-year-old Poon Hiu-wing during a trip to Taiwan in February.

Chan and Poon went to Taiwan together three months ago, but he returned alone. He was arrested by SAR authorities for allegedly stealing Poon's belongings and using her card to take money from her bank account.

Police in Taiwan found the body of Poon, dumped in a suitcase near a metro station in New Taipei.

But because there is no extradition arrangement between Hong Kong and Taiwan, authorities on both sides are still assessing how to proceed with the case.

Democratic Party legislator and lawyer James To said Hong Kong could not provide Taiwan with a DNA sample because the two places have not signed a legal mutual assistance agreement.

But he said Taiwan officials could possibly send DNA samples from the foetus to Hong Kong and ask for a comparison under the Interpol framework.
