The Immigration Department said on Tuesday that it was assisting the family of a Hong Kong man who had died while on a mountain climbing trip to Nepal.

It's reported that the man, surnamed Lam, suffered from high-altitude problems as he attempted to climb up Mount Everest along with a group of experienced hikers.

He was said to have died at the Mount Everest base camp – which is more than 5,000 metres above sea level – despite paramedic care.

The Immigration Department said the Chinese Embassy in Nepal was assisting the victim's family, and it was understood that officers were helping his relatives apply for emergency travel documents.
