Gary Stokes speaks to RTHK's Richard Pyne

The conservation group Sea Shepherd is warning that the local population of finless porpoises could be wiped out if authorities fail to uncover why there’s been a dramatic increase in fatalities.

The group said there’s an estimated 200 finless porpoises in Hong Kong and adjacent waters, and figures from the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation (OPCF) show that 21 deaths have already been recorded this year.

OPCF started handling cetacean stranding cases in Hong Kong in 2006, and the highest figure recorded since then is 33 for the whole of 2014.

Gary Stokes, Asia Director for Sea Shepherd Global, says a lot of deaths have been from boat strikes, especially in the South Lantau area, and many deaths may also be unreported if porpoises wash up on inaccessible parts of the city’s coastline.

He told RTHK’s Richard Pyne that authorities need to investigate why 10 percent of the city’s porpoises have already died this year and why they seem to be dying in greater numbers.

He also called on authorities to come up with an action plan to reduce the death toll.
