The government said on Thursday that it will conduct its largest ever survey on the mental health of the city's residents next year.
The study, by the newly formed Advisory Committee on Mental Health, will cover around 20,000 people of all ages.
It aims to find out the prevalence of mental illnesses among different age groups, the high-risk factors and related issues.
The committee's chairman, former justice secretary Wong Yan-lung, said previous studies have shown the number of people in Hong Kong suffering from psychological problems is “astonishing”.
Wong said he is particularly concerned about the sharp rise in the number of young mental health patients.
