Ip Kin-yuen talks to RTHK's Wendy Wong

The government is being urged to intervene as schools in the city generally shut out sports organisations, despite a subsidy offer if they open their facilities to public events during holidays.

Carrie Lam announced the subsidy of up to HK$80,000 a year, to encourage schools to open up their facilities during non-school hours.

A total of 130 schools have joined the scheme, but only 15 have offered to open their doors to sports organisations.

Education sector lawmaker Ip Kin-yuen, said some schools are concerned about liability issues in case accidents happen, although the sports organisations are already required to buy insurance themselves.

He told RTHK's Wendy Wong that the government should intervene and offer blanket insurance for schools who open their premises to sports events.

At a Legco meeting, several lawmakers also urged the government to buy insurance for sports groups which use school facilities.
