  • Govt aims to increase medical school seats

The government said on Thursday that it plans to increase the number of places at the city's medical schools to tackle a shortage of healthcare professionals.

The Health Secretary, Sophia Chan, said the Education Bureau has been asked to assess how many more places can be added to subjects like medicine, nursing and dentistry over the next three years.

"The Financial Secretary has already pledged resources for the three universities to build more teaching facilities in preparation for the increase of these healthcare professional students," she said.

But Chan said as these courses require clinical practice, authorities are also in touch with the Hospital Authority to accommodate an increase in students.

In a government study released last year, it was stated that Hong Kong would face a shortage of 500 doctors by 2020. It also warned that that number would double by 2030.

When public hospitals came under sever pressure during the flu season earlier this year, authorities said they had a shortage of 200 nurses.
