More than 90 Filipino and domestic workers' groups have signed a joint petition, urging Manila to revoke its decision to recall its labour attache in Hong Kong, Jalilo Dela Torre.

Officials haven't given a reason for the move, but the groups suspect it's because Dela Torre has been a vocal critic of human traffickers and unscrupulous domestic helper agencies.

Eman Villanueva from the Asian Migrants Coordinating Body said the consulate official has done a lot over the past two years to safeguard workers' rights and it is a shame he can't at least complete his three-year term here.

"We seldom see people like Dela Torre who takes some extra steps to advance the interests of the Filipino migrant workers," he said.

Villanueva said Dela Torre had initiated many steps to crack down on the illegal practices of some employment agencies and fly-by-night operators.

He told RTHK's Priscilla Ng that he fears those forces could resurface when the official leaves Hong Kong.
