The MTR has confirmed media reports that it temporarily suspended an Express Rail trial run last Friday, after the signalling system in a tunnel section was found to be unstable. The MTR said the problem was found on a section of track near Mai Po.

Engineers spotted what they believe was underground water near the track. They suspect it was the resulting moisture that had affected the signalling. The MTR said the trial run resumed about an hour and 15 minutes later.

An MTR spokesman said that although there are measures to prevent water seepage, it is not possible to waterproof the area. He added that the MTR had maintained close contact with authorities in Hong Kong and on the mainland during the incident.

The spokesman added engineers had inspected the tunnel and confirmed that it was structurally safe. He said the MTR will continue to monitor the situation.
