An alliance of groups representing foreign domestic workers have demanded a public apology from New People’s Party lawmaker Eunice Yung over her “racist” and “discriminatory” remarks about maids occupying public spaces during weekends.
At a Legco session on Wednesday, Yung called on the government to open activity centres for workers who converge on footbridges and other public spaces on their off-days. She said they are causing a nuisance to the public and posing hygiene problems.
The spokesman for the Asian Migrants’ Coordinating Body, Eman Villanueva, said Yung lacks compassion and is out of touch.
He said maids in Hong Kong are forced to stay outside on their days off because they can't get their own accommodation under the government's mandatory live-in requirement.
Villanueva said he believes most Hong Kong people are compassionate about the situation of foreign domestic helpers and they don't see their activities in public as a problem.
He said the New People's Party has a track record of trying to make political gains out of attacking domestic helpers.
The Asian Migrant's Coordinating Body said it was organising a protest march from Chater Garden to the New People's Party's office in Wan Chai in protest, at 11am on Sunday.
