The new chairman of Demosisto, Ivan Lam, says his party will focus on community work, instead of taking part in elections in future. Lam took up the post after former lawmaker Nathan Law stepped down.

Speaking after a radio programme, Lam said they would work on raising political awareness, especially among young people. He added that they would continue to advocate democratic self-determination, meaning letting Hong Kong people decide their political future.

Beijing claims self-determination is a euphemism for independence.

Meanwhile, Nathan Law said he felt burnt out after being at the centre of political storms for years.

Law, who was a leading figure in the Occupy Movement, was disqualified from Legco for the way in which he took his oath of office following a 2016 ruling by the National People's Congress Standing Committee. He said he would focus on his studies.
