The Court of Appeal has rejected an appeal application from a technician who was found guilty of arson and rioting during the Mong Kok clashes two years ago.

Yeung Ka-lun was jailed for four years and nine months for setting a taxi on fire and taking part in the riot.

The court ruled on Wednesday that the conviction and sentence were sound and suitable.

The judges said the correct legal principles were adopted in using pictures to identify the defendant, who has buck teeth.

They agreed there's a need for a deterrent sentence for what they called an extremely serious offence.

The judges said a rule of law society like Hong Kong definitely does not allow unjustified serious violence as witnessed in Yeung's case, especially violence against law enforcement officers.

They said there's no room for shortening the jail time for the defendant.
