  • Censure move's timing not appropriate: Tanya Chan

Tanya Chan talks to RTHK's Janice Wong

Civic Party lawmaker Tanya Chan has expressed concern about the timing of a motion to censure Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui who snatched a civil servant’s phone during a Legco meeting two weeks ago.

The censure motion was filed by New People's Party chairwoman Regina Ip, who believes the move won't affect ongoing police investigations into the matter.

But Chan believes any censure motion should be carried out after a police investigation has concluded, or after a court's judgement should there be a trial.

She said though the Legco probe will be a closed-door affair, she is afraid that some information will leak out accidentally and that may affect the investigation and a possible trial that may follow.

Chan said it should be asked if the censure motion is necessary. If the courts are going to decide on this case, then lawmakers should wait for that, she said.

She also told RTHK's Janice Wong that it is not appropriate to reveal details of the security camera footage before any court case is concluded.
