Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Wednesday rejected a suggestion by a lawmaker to set up an inquiry to look into what he called the deep-seated problems that led to the Mong Kok riot in 2016.
Pro-democracy legislator Shiu Ka-chun wanted a probe to find out the root causes of the clashes.
But Lam rejected the suggestion, saying if there is to be a probe, it should target people who want to seek justice by breaking the law.
Any time, any government can have a room for improvement, she said. But that does not mean that can be seen as an excuse to commit offences, the CE said.
