Two people are in a critical condition after a lift accident in Tsuen Wan, in which the lift apparently failed to stop and hurtled to the top of a building.

The man and woman were trapped in the lift at Waterside Plaza following the incident, and were later rescued by firefighters.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department said the lift's cable was intact, and engineers are now investigating why it failed to stop when it should've done.

Operation of the lift was suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
