A primary school girl who was earlier arrested over the alleged theft of jewellery worth HK$5 million from her father’s female friend has been hospitalised after bruise marks on her body raised suspicions of parental abuse.

The 10-year-old was released on bail on Wednesday night. But police say a social worker who visited the girl at the police station raised the alarm after finding bruises on the girl's arms and legs. Officers then took her to hospital.

No arrests have been made in connection with the suspected abuse.

Two of the girl's 12-year-old schoolmates were also arrested over the last two days in connection with the alleged theft. One of them has been released unconditionally while the other has been released on bail.

The jewellery belonged to a woman who recently moved in with her father at the Lower Wong Tai Sin public housing estate. The two diamond necklaces and a diamond bracelet are yet to be recovered.
