A suspected World War II bomb was uncovered in Wan Chai on Thursday, the third explosive device found at the same site this year.
Roads in the area were cordoned off as a safety precaution after the discovery at the junction of Expo Drive and Hung Hing Road.
Construction is taking place at the site for the MTR's future Shatin-Central Line. Workers there were evacuated.
Offices, hotels, businesses and residential buildings in the area were also evacuated, and authorities were urging drivers to steer well clear of the area.
They also said traffic was likely to be extremely congested for the morning rush hour on Friday and called on people to head to work early.
Two massive bombs were defused at the same location in January. They were believed to have been dropped by American warplanes during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong between 1941 and 1945.
