The State Council on Saturday named Zheng Yanxiong as the new director of the central government's liaison office in Hong Kong.

He takes office immediately, replacing Luo Huining who had been in the position since January 2020.

Zheng, 59, also succeeded Luo as adviser to the Committee for Safeguarding National Security.

He had previously served as a Guangdong official, and was appointed in July 2020 director of the Office for Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong.

The Chief Executive, John Lee, welcomed the appointment of Zheng and expressed gratitude to Luo.
