The director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office has expressed confidence about the future of Hong Kong as he wrapped up his six-day inspection trip to the SAR, the Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday.
The CE said Xia Baolong outlined "six hopes" for Hong Kong, among them safeguarding national security and the rule of law, and maintaining the city's stability and prosperity.
Lee also quoted the senior Beijing official as saying Hongkongers should remember the lessons of the 2019 unrest.
"There are many ways to express opinions, and protest is not the only way. Government departments receive opinions every day through email, post or calls. People can also relay their views to legislators," Lee stressed.
Asked about the cancellation of a Labour Day march, the CE said organisers are responsible for ensuring the safety of the event.
"If event organisers are worried that their event will be hijacked, they need to consider carefully. They must ensure it’s lawful, orderly, and in line with public safety and interests."
Xia spent his last day in the city visiting the University of Hong Kong and other schools before flying back to the capital in the afternoon.
