Police fired water cannon at protesters in Mong Kok on Sunday night after the demonstrators set roadblocks and fires on the streets of the busy district.

The water cannon-equipped police anti-riot vehicle was deployed at least twice, shooting out stinging streams of water at protesters on the sidewalk as police tried to disperse them from the area.

Many people were subsequently arrested.

In the process, police sprayed a group of journalists at the intersection of Nathan Road and Argyle Street, yelling at them to back off.

Firefighters put out a large fire that had been set at the intersection of Nathan Road and Shantung Street.

At around 10.30pm, police made more arrests after unleashing several volleys of tear gas near Shantung Street.

Following early protests at malls in Kowloon Tong, Causeway Bay and Tsuen Wan – prompting the early closure of multiple shopping centres, anti-government protesters moved to other areas, including Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon Bay, Tai Po and Tai Koo in the evening.

In Tseung Kwan O, riot police fired a number of rubber bullets and beanbag rounds at a small group of protesters taking refuge behind a wall of umbrellas at Kwong Ming Court— near the car park where a University of Science and Technology student apparently suffered a fall last week, leading to his death on Friday.

The police then ran into the estate, only for a large group of residents to shout abuse at them. An officer was seen pointing pepper spray at the residents, warning them to stay back, before retreating onto the street.
