Warnings issued as wild weather hits Hong Kong

The Observatory has issued the amber rainstorm warning and a special notice on flooding in the northern New Territories as thunderstorms roll in over Hong Kong.

The amber warning was issued at 9.50pm on Thursday. It indicates heavy rain, exceeding 30 millimetres an hour, is likely to continue across the SAR. The warning was cancelled just before midnight.

People are warned to beware of flooding in low-lying areas and stay away from watercourses, given the risk of flash floods.

Heavy rain of more than 70 millimetres an hour is affecting the northern New Territories, with Ta Kwu Ling especially affected. People are advised to take precautions and listen out for flood sirens.

The thunderstorm warning will remain in effect into the early hours of Friday.
