  • Volunteers urge more clean-up at Kwai Fong station

Volunteer Adam Chan talks to RTHK's Olivia Tam

A group of volunteers on Friday carried out cleaning work at some areas of the Kwai Fong MTR station, saying they fear residue of tear gas is still left there even though the rail operator had cleaned up the area on Thursday.

The MTR action came after police fired tear gas directly into the station on Sunday and many people complained they could smell the gas days after it.

Despite the MTR's efforts, messages posted by "residents of Kwai Fong" had urged more clean-up. The people who turned up on Friday mopped up areas in the concourse and said they didn't use any cleaning products as they feared MTR officials may prohibit them.

The volunteers said they had used just water to clean the surface, but still found a lot of dirt is still there despite MTR efforts the previous day. Some feared the effect of chemicals from the tear gas was still there.

One of the volunteers, Adam Chan, said that MTR staff had tried to dissuade them, thinking that they were there for unruly protests. But he said that was not the case.

"We are very concerned about the hygiene situation after the tear gas was fired that day," said Chan. "We really love our community, we really love our Hong Kong."

He said the volunteers found the station to still carry a lot of dirt despite the cleaning by MTR staff.

Chan told told RTHK's Olivia Tam that more clean-up is needed at the station area.
