Police said on Friday that the former coach of Hong Kong's star hurdler, Vera Lui, has been charged with molesting her a decade ago.

The 77-year-old man was arrested in January, about two months after Lui made the allegations on her Facebook page.

Police said they have charged the man with indecent assault and he will appear in Fanling court for mention next Friday.

Lui posted a detailed account of the alleged assault in a public post on her Facebook account last November on her 23rd birthday, saying that telling the truth was a form of release for her, and also transforms her from a victim into a survivor.

The athlete added that she wanted to bring more public attention to the issue of child sex abuse; encourage other victims to step forward; and to de-stigmatise conversations about sex, and sex abuse.

Lui said she decided to tell her story after being inspired by Olympic gold medal-winning US gymnast McKayla Maroney, who last year revealed that she was molested by a former USA Gymnastics team doctor. Maroney was among thousands of former assault victims across the globe to join the #Metoo campaign on social media.
