Two more police officers – who were among seven jailed for assaulting activist Ken Tsang during the 2014 Occupy protests – were on Thursday granted leave to appeal against their convictions and two-year jail sentences.

Constables Lau Hing-pui and Wong Wai-ho were already out on bail, and become the third and fourth officers to be given the court’s permission to appeal.

Lawyers for the two constables argued that the trial judge erred by determining that alleged TV footage of the beating on October 15, 2014 was authentic and admissible.

They also said the judge made a mistake by identifying or inferring that the two officers were either present or took part in the assault.

The lawyers further argued that the two-year prison terms handed down by the District Court a year ago this week were manifestly excessive.

The vice-president of the Court of Appeal, Mr Justice Michael Lunn, granted the officers leave to appeal, saying he was satisfied their grounds were reasonably arguable.
