The Fire Services Department is investigating a fire that broke out in a construction site under the Hoi Kok Street elevated bypass in Tsuen Wan, blanketing it and surrounding buildings in smoke.
Firefighters said the blaze started out in a two-storey modular block inside the construction site – managed by the Drainage Services Department – at 6:38am and was upgraded to a No. 3 alarm just before 7am.
Four jets and three breathing apparatus teams were deployed, and the fire was put out just before 11am.
Two people – both of whom were Drainage Services Department staff – suffered bone fractures in the incident and were sent to Yan Chai Hospital for treatment.
Officers from the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) were also called out to the blaze to investigate the possible toxicity of the heavy smoke in the area.
“The air quality data collected at the air monitoring station in the Tsuen Wan District has not shown any abnormality for the time being,” the EPD said in a statement.
“Members of the public in Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi and Kwai Chung may be affected by the smoke and unusual odour carried by the wind. Hence, members of the public are advised to close their doors and windows if necessary, and stay calm.”
