Two In Intensive Care After Getting Sinovac Jabs

Health authorities said on Sunday that two patients were sent to intensive care, one of whom is fighting for his life, after receiving Sinovac vaccines, while another two were admitted to hospital.

The Department of Health said one of the patients – an 80-year-old man who has a history of diabetes, hypertension and stroke – was in critical condition.

He took the vaccine last Monday, and complained of chest pain when he sought treatment at Caritas Medical Centre on Saturday. The department said he did not respond well to treatment, and the initial diagnosis was an acute coronary syndrome.

Another 72-year-old woman was vaccinated in Tseung Kwan O on Saturday, and felt malaise after vaccination and skipped two doses of regular insulin.

The patient, who also has a history of diabetes and hypertension, was taken to intensive care at Prince of Wales Hospital after she's found to have severe complications from diabetes.

This came after the Hospital Authority said it’s trying to find out more information about two people, who've been sent to hospital after taking the Sinovac jabs at the Kwun Chung Sports Centre on Sunday morning.

The head of the vaccination facility there said a 66-year-old woman complained of chest pain and feeling nauseous minutes after getting the shot.

Another 45-year-old woman, meanwhile, felt unwell and developed allergic reactions such as rashes after receiving the jab and leaving the centre.

A chief manager from the authority, Lau Ka-hin, said the 45-year-old is in stable condition but admitted he doesn’t have other information on hand.

“She was brought to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and currently her condition is stable. I have no other information about this patient, I also don’t know whether this is the first case which developed hypersensitivity reactions after the vaccination,” he said.

Overall, about 8,100 received their first dose of Sinovac vaccine on Sunday, taking the total to almost 92,000. About 1,200 have so far received the BioNTech vaccine.

A further 758,000 doses of the Comirnaty vaccine arrived from manufacturer BioNTech on Sunday, taking the total to more than 1.3 million. Only 1,200 shots have so far been given.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong recorded 16 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday.

Thirteen of them were locally acquired and five were untraceable, including a real estate agent, a retiree, and a worker who works at the airport's third runway project site.

The Centre for Health Protection said more than thirty of his colleagues have been quarantined.

It added there are also less than 10 preliminary positive cases.
