Alice Chan talks to RTHK's Candice Wong

A local travel agency closed down abruptly on Monday, affecting the holiday plans of about 570 people.

A total of 18 tour groups to various mainland cities arranged by An Shun Travel have been cancelled, as the company informed the Travel Industry Council that it has stopped operations due to "financial problems".

It is estimated that the travellers have paid the company more than HK$900,000 for the trips.

The council's executive director, Alice Chan, criticised the travel agency, saying it's irresponsible to close down just ahead of the new year holiday, after people had made plans for travel during the period.

Chan told RTHK's Candice Wong that some of those who booked the trips were scheduled to depart Hong Kong on Tuesday morning.

The council said eligible travellers could apply for compensations from the Travel Industry Compensation Fund.

It said it has received requests for help from about 20 affected travellers so far.
