The MTR said its train services were gradually resuming at around 12:45pm after anti-extradition protesters brought the rail network to a grinding halt on Monday morning, creating unprecedented transport chaos in Hong Kong.

The railway operator said lots of objects such as bicycles and trolleys have been thrown onto the tracks.

In one case, an East Rail train which was not carrying any passengers hit a trolley on the track, and action by protesters blocking train doors on Tsuen Wan line has stranded a train for more than 2 hours between two stations.

The MTR also said protesters also stuck fire extinguishers in platform gaps on Tung Chung line.

The company's general manager for special duties Alan Cheng said this kind of action could have caused great danger.

"If trains hit these objects there would have been serious consequences as well as danger to train operations and passengers on board. We urge people not to carry out such irresponsible acts," he said.
