Protesters explain why they turned out

Thousands of protesters have began marching through Tseung Kwan O, to show their anger at the government over the extradition bill saga and a range of issues that have stemmed from it - including police behaviour.

People have been chanting slogans to reiterate their demands, including an independent inquiry into the policing of recent protests. The authorised route will go through the Po Lam and Hang Hau area, and end at the Velodrome Park.

Many protesters said they want to participate because of the police clearance action in Wong Tai Sin on Saturday night, saying they want to protect their neighbourhood.

Clashes erupted between police and protesters - who were joined by angry local residents.

There had been similar scenes in Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, following a largely peaceful protest earlier in the day. More than 20 people were arrested on suspicion of illegal assembly, possession of weapons and assault.

Two months of protests - which began with demonstrations against the now-shelved extradition bill - have seen increasing levels of unrest.

The marches now see people voicing their frustrations over a wider range of of issues, including political reform and allegations of police brutality.
