  • 'Tighter rules needed to regulate taxi cameras'

Civic Party lawmaker Jeremy Tam has warned that guidelines currently being drawn up by the government to regulate cameras installed in taxis are too loose and do not protect passengers’ privacy.

He said there is no law preventing drivers from making public the videos.

This comes as Apple Daily released a 16-minute video caught by an onboard camera allegedly showing singer Andy Hui, 51, and TVB actress Jacqueline Wong, 30, getting intimate.

Hui, who is married to singer Sammi Cheng, was expected to speak to reporters on Tuesday evening about the video which has gone viral on social media.

Tam said drivers would be tempted into sharing videos they make if famous people are caught on their cameras.

The legislator, who’s a member of the government-appointed Committee on Taxi Service Quality, said under the proposed guidelines, drivers only need to post notices inside their vehicle to alert passengers that a security camera is in operation.

"The instruction says they should not disclose any of these videos or voice recordings unless requested by the Transport Department or the police. But if they still distribute these video clips, there's no consequence to them," he said.

Tam said the videos should be encrypted and only made accessible to law enforcement agencies.
